Plastic-Free Andros: When a Whole Island Came Together for Nature

This past May, something meaningful took place on Andros. Over three days, from May 7 to 9, 2025, our island took part in the Plastic Free Greece campaign, bringing focus, care, and a strong sense of connection to the land and sea we call home.

In collaboration with the A.C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation, the Municipality of Andros, and local groups, our community came together with a shared goal: to help protect the natural environment that makes Andros unique.

From Beaches to the Seafloor — A for Effort

With sleeves rolled up and a shared sense of purpose, volunteers of all ages came together across four different sites, from sandy beaches to the waters below. At Paraporti and Mylos Beach, local students, residents, and visitors collected over 50 kilograms of plastic and other waste.

At the same time, divers in Neimporio Marina and Korthi Bay removed more than 250 kilograms of debris from the seabed, including old tires, ropes, cans, and other discarded items from everyday life.

But the effort wasn’t only about what was removed. It was just as much about the spirit behind it all. There was teamwork, connection, and a steady commitment to making a difference. Every cleanup bag filled was a small but important step toward a healthier island, and everyone involved helped carry that effort forward.
